چکیده

Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) require a suite of essential habitats during their long migration. Therefore, the identification critical is important for continuation successful recovery. In this study we investigated behaviours and habitat usage exhibited by humpback in two known aggregation sites on east coast Australia. Using combined 5400 whale records collected from Hervey Bay between 1999 2009 Gold Coast 2011 2018, analysed different types behavioural categories. We found that primarily surface travel non-aggressive social behaviour, whereas both appeared to be similarly resting. Our results suggest provides wide range activities, particular resting mother–calf pairs, mature males seeking copulation socialising immature whales. had higher number pair sightings, confirming area as an site. This demonstrates regions are annual migration, but should considered protection area.

Humpback Whale Song or Humpback Whale Sonar ? A Reply to Au

Au and colleagues’ arguments against the hypothesis that humpback whale songs function as long-range sonar are based on questionable assumptions rather than on empirical data. Like other echolocating mammals (e.g., bats), singing humpback whales: 1) localize targets in the absence of visual information; 2) possess a highly innervated peripheral auditory system; and 3) modulate the temporal and ...

Acoustic properties of humpback whale songs.

A vertical array of five hydrophones was used to measure the acoustic field in the vertical plane of singing humpback whales. Once a singer was located, two swimmers with snorkel gear were deployed to determine the orientation of the whale and position the boat so that the array could be deployed in front of the whale at a minimum standoff distance of at least 10 m. The spacing of the hydrophon...

Automatic Classification of Humpback Whale Social Calls

Acoustic methods are becoming increasingly common in the study of marine mammal populations and behavior. Automating the detection and classification of whale vocalizations has been a central aim of these methods. The focus has primarily been on intra-species detection and classification, however, humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) social call detection and classification has largely remai...

HUMPBACK WHALE ( Megaptera novaeangliae ) : North Atlantic Stock

These six regions represent relatively discrete subpopulations, fidelity to which is determined matrilineally (Clapham and Mayo 1987). Recent genetic analysis of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) has indicated that this fidelity has persisted over an evolutionary timescale in at least the Icelandic and Norwegian feeding grounds (Palsbøll et al. 1995, Larsen et al. 1996). Genetic partitioning is not evi...

Information theory analysis of Australian humpback whale song.

Songs produced by migrating whales were recorded off the coast of Queensland, Australia, over six consecutive weeks in 2003. Forty-eight independent song sessions were analyzed using information theory techniques. The average length of the songs estimated by correlation analysis was approximately 100 units, with song sessions lasting from 300 to over 3100 units. Song entropy, a measure of struc...
